Music Therapy in Aged Care
Music Therapy has shown many benefits in research over the years for people coping with ageing and associated health conditions.
People do not need any musical background to engage in and benefit from music therapy - just an appreciation of music!
A range of musical experiences can be used to engage people in music therapy including:
I have provided music therapy services to older adults in care facilities for 20 years through establishing and implementing individual and small group programs tailored to provide person-centred care.
I also have experience supporting older people in community settings (in their homes or in hospice) living with chronic and terminal health conditions including dementia and cancer.

A range of musical experiences can be used to engage people in music therapy including:
- listening to preferred music styles (played live by the music therapist, or on recordings)
- learning relaxation and imagery techniques, which can be enhanced with music listening
- reminiscing, or discussing life experiences in conjunction with important musical memories
- engaging in music-making together (such as singing, playing simple rhythmic accompaniments, playing an instrument previously learnt, or writing lyrics/songs together).

Services available:
- Individual sessions (in client home or facility; geographical area dependent on day of the week)
- Group sessions (in facility or community setting; maximum 15 people) - Price dependent upon length of session and travel
- Aged Care package: weekly group and individual sessions in facility including assessment, regular documentation/liaising with staff, and 3-monthly evaluations - Price dependent upon number of hours contracted weekly
